Trails
Coon Rapids is a great place to get connected to nature as Coon Rapids and Whiterock Conservancy are home to all kinds of great trails. Coon Rapids is centrally located along the American Discovery Trail (ADT), which stretches coast to coast for more than 6,800 miles and runs through 15 states and hundreds of communities, parks and wilderness areas. Today the American Discovery Trail in our area is routed along E63 on the northeast edge of town. Community leaders are working to reroute major portions of the ADT to to abandoned rail lines. In Coon Rapids, you'll find a paved trail running along the Middle Raccoon River and bike friendly streets that connect the city's parks, playgrounds, aquatic center and business district.

Riverside Trail users can bike, walk or run along the scenic Middle Raccoon River as well as stop off for great birding and fishing.  Stop near the halfway point at Riverside Park to gain direct access to the Middle Racoon River. The location is a popular entry point for kayaks and canoes as well as fishermen. The sandy beach below the rapids is a good spot for local kids to take a dip in the river. The park is located off of E63 on the northeast edge of Coon Rapids just east of the Sumpter Avenue Bridge. Connected to the park and a short drive up E63 is the Riverside Park (Hilltop) Campground that offers full-hookups and a bathhouse. A dock and seating area installed in 2018 at Ribble Pound on the southern leg of the trail is perfect for fishing and bird watching.  There are three parking areas along the Coon Rapids Riverside Trail.  A parking lot at 320th Street near Velvet Avenue is the most northern access point. The most popular place to get on the trail is at Riverside Park. The park is located off of E63 on the northeast edge of Coon Rapids just east of the Sumpter Avenue Bridge.  At the southern end of the trail, trail users can park in a lot off of Main Street at the east end of Coon Rapids.

Whiterock Conservancy

Whiterock Conservancy is 5,500 public acres along the scenic Middle Raccoon River Valley near Coon Rapids. You can choose from over 40 miles of single track mountain bike trails or more than 20 miles of trails tailored for horse riding, but of course, all of those trails are open for hiking as well. While you are here, plan to fish from any of the 10 fully stocked ponds or schedule a guided ATV ride through the lush savannas, rolling pastures, wetlands, riverside bluffs and native prairies that make up Whiterock Conservancy. Another great way to tour the scenic conservancy is down the Middle Raccoon River in a kayak or canoe. Stay for a few days in any of the local RV, rustic or tent campgrounds in the area.

Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation Department
The Parks and Recreation department offers several youth sports programs including: little league softball and baseball, t-ball, flag football, youth football, swim team, youth basketball and youth volleyball. They host a kick, pass and punt contest and spot shot contest. Their goal is to provide fun physical learning opportunities for Coon Rapids youth.

The Middle Raccoon River
The Middle Raccoon River, 92 miles long, rises in northwestern Carroll County and flows generally southeastwardly through Guthrie and Dallas counties, past Carroll, Coon Rapids, Springbrook State Park, Panora, Linden, and Redfield. The three dams located along its course are the Lake Panorama dam and the Lennon Mill dam at Panora, and the Redfield dam at Redfield. The Middle Raccoon River flows into the South Raccoon River about one mile south of Redfield. Coon Rapids and Whiterock Conservancy offer many entry/exit points into the river for those who enjoy kayaking, canoeing or floating the river.

The Coon Rapids Golf Course is a 9-hole, 5,900 par 70 golf course that features multiple water hazards and sand traps to challenge even the most experienced golfer. A clubhouse with great food and a bar awaits you at the end of your round. The golf course hosts monthly tournaments as well as Men’s Night (Tuesdays), Ladies’ Night (Wednesdays) and Couples’ Night (Fridays).

AVAD Hunt Club

The AVAD Hunt Club is a west central Iowa hunt club that specializes in upland bird hunting. The hunt club offers sporting clay stations and trap fields for hunters to warm up. It is also the home to area high school shooting teams. A lodge and clubhouse are available for after hunt socializing, meals, and overnight stays. Corporate hunts are welcome and guide service with dogs can be arranged to point the way for your Iowa pheasant hunting experience.
