Downtown shoppers and guests will now have access to a public restroom every day of the week. City Council members and Main Street Coon Rapids members collaborated to provide the public restroom facilities in the MSCR office at 406 Main Street. Both men’s and women’s restrooms can be accessed through doors on the east side of the office building by the Veterans Memorial Park between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. They will also be open extended hours during special downtown events.
A MSCR task force lead by Steve Houp coordinated the bathroom project which included installing a new exterior door, a timed locking mechanism, security cameras and signage. Carroll Glass installed the new exterior glass doors mid-June. Feld Security came in the following week to install a locking mechanism that will automatically unlock and lock the doors on a timed schedule. They also installed three cameras that will monitor the interior hallway, exterior entrance and outdoor parking areas. South Sign Company wrapped up the project by installing new signage directing patrons to the restroom facilities. The city will maintain and clean the restrooms.
“This is a very generous amenity the city is providing businesses downtown,” said Houp. “Several of the businesses on Main Street don’t have public restrooms for their customers. We are working hard to attract out-of-town guests to shop, dine and spend time downtown, but with travel comes the need to use a public facility such as this, so we are grateful the city council agreed to open and maintain these restrooms for Main Street patrons and guests.”
