Main Street Coon Rapids organizers announced the return of their Second Annual Main Street Block Party. The Memorial Day Weekend festival will start at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30 and rock well into the evening.

“Our first Main Street Block Party was a huge success with something fun for all ages,” said MSCR Promotions Chair Natasha Adams about the 2019 event. Unfortunately, COVID caused organizers to cancel the 2020 event, making this summer’s block party a much-anticipated celebration.

“We are excited to announce that we are expanding this year’s event to include more children and adult entertainment thanks to some great partners and sponsors,” Adams continued. “With so many new activities, we will be closing off two blocks of Main Street between Sixth and Fourth Avenues this year compared to just one in 2019.”

Termed the “kids zone”, the east block will house several children’s games from 2-6 p.m. The kids zone will include four large inflatables, Twyla Brede’s face painting, balloon art and spin art tent, carnival games at the American Legion, putt putt golf and a storywalk. Thanks to generous sponsors, the kids zone will be free admission.

The west end of Main Street will be fenced off and house adult and teen games, although children are welcome. A double elimination bags tournament will start at 2:00 p.m. Registration for the double elimination tournament will be from noon – 1:30 p.m. with a $50 entry fee per team. The winning cash payouts will be first place $250; second place $150; and third place $100.

A fun new game for ages 11 and up this year is minnow racing. Contestants race live minnows down a water filled channel. To encourage the minnows to swim towards the finish line, contestants blow through straws in the water near the fish. The ‘fin-tastic’ game will be open from 5-7 p.m.

Adults can enter a Bumper Pool Tournament at Northside Rec starting at 6:00 p.m.

Finally, the night will cap off with a live band on Main Street. Sponsored by Karl Chevrolet, The Tank Anthony Band will play from 6 p.m. – midnight. The Tank Anthony Band, a country group from Iowa Falls, produces a soulful alternative-country sound.

Throughout the event, tasty treats and good meals can be purchased downtown from Chuck’s Bar and Grill, Frohlich’s SuperValu, Jenna’s Tattooed Confections, Nature Ammil and La Terraza. A beer garden will be provided by Chuck’s Bar & Grill from 2 p.m. – close.

Picnic tables will be provided, but it is suggested you bring your own lawn chairs. Parking will available in the Hartung Town Parking lot between Fifth and Sixth Avenues south of Railway Street.

Co-hosted with the City of Coon Rapids, this event would not be possible without the financial support of the following sponsors. The Tank Anthony Band sponsored by Karl Chevrolet; inflatables sponsored by New Way Ford; face painting, balloon art and spin art sponsored by POET Biorefining - Coon Rapids; storywalk sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach and the Coon Rapids Public Library; carnival games hosted by American Legion Family; putt putt golf hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church; minnow races sponsored by Chuck’s Bar & Grill and Bags Tournament sponsored by E.T. Products. Platinum sponsors: Chuck's Bar and Grill and Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities; Gold sponsors: Coon Rapids Hardware Hank and Dahl’s Meat Locker; Silver sponsors: AV Photography, Community Insurance Agency, Coon Rapids Enterprise, Dan Pomeroy, Frohlich’s SuperValu, KD Portables, NV Tree Service and Venteicher Electric.

While the event is free, any free-will donations will go to support the MSCR program and future events like the block party, Movies on Main, Treats on the Streets, etc. A free-will admission jar will be located at the entrance to the band and beer garden area.
